Steel is the material of choice for gravel bikes given its ability to dampen vibrations and soften the ride - yet a modern steel gravel bike will not come cheap!

Koga Miyata's were famed not only for their road bikes but also for their touring and vacation bikes which were constructed from the same FM1 hardlite triple butted and splined steel. These lightweight bikes had geometries better suited to touring including better ground clearance, more frame clearance and plenty of handy braze-on fitting mudguards, low panniers hub lights etc. These characteristics make them ideal candidates for a neo-retro gravel build that combines speed with mild off-road capabilities.

The GentsTour has plenty of frame clearance to allow for larger gravel tires thanks to the cantilever brakes. The tire dynamo is activated by the lever on the seat stay and works really well with the original headlight. Wider tires (42-622) do fit the frame but interfere with tire dynamo.

The bike has a more modern Shimano 105 (ST-5510) 9x3 groupset with integrated shifters and powerful dual-pivot brakes. Only the cantilever brakes are the original Shiaman STX. Zoom gravel drop-down with Pro ahead stem provides a more modern cockpit feel.
